Attention All Troop Leaders:

We are looking for a fun way to bring Webelos and Boy Scouts together.  The Webelos to Boy Scout transition should include exposure to the overall Boy Scout program and the Webelos need to have positive experiences with the Troops.  One way we might help is an event, where the Webelos can interact with the Boy Scouts.  In Packs, with very little contact with a local Troop, except for the mandatory requirements the guys need for their Arrow of Light Award, it sometimes seems to be a culture shock for many of the boys moving up into Boy Scouts.

Webelos Woods is designed to give Webelos Scouts an in-depth preview of the Boy Scouting experience.  The purpose is to help them form a desire to know more about Boy Scouting and give the Webelos a preview of the thrills of Scouting.  This program will reinforce the Boy Scouting values, procedures, methods and skills.

We Need Your Troop. Come join us for one of the biggest camping events for Webelos Scouts and Boy Scouts put on by the Crater District.  We will ask each participating Troop to stage an event on Saturday, which will be visited by the Webelos Scouts throughout the day.   (See the Activities Page on this site to learn more about the skills we would like to offer the Webelos, you may have other ideas as well that would fit into our program.)

From the moment they walk on the property the Webelos will be treated like Boy Scouts. This is a patrol-oriented event, and each Patrol will be led by a Boy Scout acting as their Patrol leader.  They are expected to work together and take care of themselves.  Webelos Patrols will move as a group throughout the weekend. This event will give them a chance to meet Boy Scouts and swap stories while learning about “Troop Life”.

While they are having a great time, they are learning. They are learning the skills inherent in their Activity Badges and the Scout Skills programs. They are learning to trust their abilities, gaining confidence in themselves. They are learning to work together with other Scouts. They are learning to make new friends and to feel more comfortable in new situations.

One of the goals of our camp is to get the Webelos used to the "boy led" philosophy of Boy Scouting. Accordingly, we want our teachers to be all Boy Scouts. Where each class is taught by a teaching team of Boy Scouts and one adult whose responsibility it is to oversee the materials presented by the Scouts to ensure their accuracy, to handle questions brought by parents and Cub leaders and to handle any discipline problems that may arise that are outside of the abilities of the Boy Scouts (i.e., if a Cub is disruptive the Boy Scouts will handle that problem. If the Cub is continually disruptive, the adult team member will take over the handling of the problem).

Although the structure is different from a Cub-parent weekend campout, BSA camp safety regulations still require an adult to accompany the Webelos Scouts.

The Webelos and their accompanying Adults will also be able to visit your Troop camp site, to see the realities of how your boys camp.

This weekend event will be an excellent opportunity for your Troop to welcome potential transitioning Scouts and to share information about your Unit and the Boy Scouts.

I would like you to consider too, the possibility of having a Pioneering type challenge for the Boy Scouts in your Troop, to lash and build a project of their own choosing ex: climbing tower, cat walk, or any other similar project. for the Webelos and Boy Scouts to actually be able to climb on.  We could have Awards for the most enjoyed by the Webelos, and best constructed by the Boy Scout Leaders, or any similar ways for acknowledging their work.

This event will be held Oct. 6th, 7th, and 8th, coinciding with the Cub Family Camp and Olympics, and the Crater Boy Scout Camp out, with assistance from the OA and our local Troops.   (Tigers, Wolves and Bears will be participating in the Cub Olympics, while the Webelos will be participating with the Boy Scouts)
