Information

CRATER DISTRICT WEBELOS KLONDIKE DERBY

Part of the history that shaped our nation lies in the chapter unfolded in the Great North Country of Alaska.

There men traversed unbelievable distances and encountered tremendous obstacles - but they moved onward with sleds pulled by huskies. Prospectors from the Juneau area went into the interior of Alaska to prospect for gold in the Upper Yukon. The rich gold mines around Fortmile were discovered in 1886. The Birch Creek deposits were found in 1899. All across the frozen wastes of Alaska and Yukon the prospectors carried their never ending quest for gold farther into the wilderness.

It is in this tradition that the Klondike Derby is spirited. Sleds, either home made or store bought, are pulled by Webelos serving as huskies. At each station traversed to a practical problem involving basic Webelos skills will be encountered. After working out the problem or performing the task the team will have its tally card marked and then be off to the next area.Reservation.
